a brother with perfect timing...

there's a time for everything...in time or all in good time things will happen...the timing was just not right...when the time comes...we shall wait for the right time...perfect timing...you made it just in time...the times we're living in...time waits for no man (& woman)...i just don't have the time for such...time is running out...time is money...this is not the right time...can we make this another time?...in the last days of time...i'm running out of time...it's time...

i wouldn't be too sure what perfect or right time or timing is though there is that 'moment' which is so often talked about in photography and i suppose with other mediums as well, that certain whatyamacallit? yeah that...

i've been challenging my
self with that 'moment' when making/taking images, to go beyond what is readily available and seek deeper into the moment, yet i sometimes wonder whether one isn't missing the picture with all this concern for something somewhat intangible...more likely than not i do perhaps miss it, only cause one maybe waiting for too long for something to happen that is significant, or not long enough...mmm...all rather precarious...

so i've decided to just give it a shot, pun intended, that is not to say without putting thought into what i do, nonetheless to be more forgiving of self, than to find myself paralysed by doubt or fear...

”...over analysis leads to paralysis, mediocrity my nemesis...” - ras kass on the track 'reelishymn'

“oooh...what you got to loose? let mud fly...” - mf doom on the track 'go with the flow'

was chatting to a friend the other day and they said to me, “...was travelling with my boss and realised, its not brains that gets you places, hence total idiots get ahead, cos' they are so oblivious they don't have time to doubt...”...i struggle with seeing other people as idiots, especially the sort that 'get ahead', surely there's something in there, in their heads that absolves the idiocy, nonetheless doubt is a mother & father fucker that does separate the brave from the stupid...

suppose a lot to do with 'that moment', going for the kill as it where, striking the iron whilst hot and i know only too well all the cold steel i've been left with from the nauseating idea of killing...seriously though knowing when the time is right is not that simple, more so an emotional function than an intellectual process or a combination of the two, when one says they 'know'...

yet and perhaps it does lie more in the feeling, what one puts in and this goes without saying, that one doesn't always get what they put in, all process dependant, for some things just do take a while to come through...i mean when dealing with time, it could be anything from a fleeting moment to a long lasting one...more so when dealing with the creative process and all 'things' in existence do spring forth from a creative state of being...

whether you're coming from a god said "let there be light" instant 'light bulb' moment or a boom bap big bang theory of practice or anything in between these contested poles of creation, there's some feeling, known or unbeknownst that goes into that defining 'moment'...'that' that would define the perfect in timing...

i'm not closer in conclusion to zoning in on what the 'right moment' is, nonetheless if it be about the process and what goes into it, then concluding is not the end all but a work in constant progress...
am working on it though, growing the certainty of and within self; intuition, instincts, gut feeling, all that jazz...speaking of jazz, old man abdullah ibrahim got something about timing on the 1987 documentary/bio-pic called “abdullah ibrahim: a brother with perfect timing”...well worth the watch...

what it is, till next time

inside the store
these images form part of a fashion photo series i call [though i'm sure the stylist would not agree to this term :]...masakhane traders...mainly cause it was taken at various general dealer stores in and around soweto [orlando east and diepkloof]...i feel it signifies the major theme of what masakhane traders is about...

where the store owners knew their clientèle personally...as a child, one would get sent to the store and when you got there, the store owner would inquire about how your mother &/or father is? taking the role of parent beyond the yard, when the 'village' raised a child...

snack spot in diepkloof

...if you where some cent's short, the man or lady would be kool cause he/she knew they would get the money later, trust was rife, not to say
the odd knuckle head wouldn't get his way or what have you, yet there
was a deep sense of community...

...and most likely you would get ibhansela at the store, bhansela being an added free extra of something for continued support of the store...for th
e kids it was something like a champion sweets or if lucky them thick candy sticks, yellow or pink in colour....

...diepkloof & orlando...

we/i hope to tap into some of that local store energy on this here platform, through the dialogue whether visual, written or music, nothing fancy just good ol' fashion exchange/interaction good or bad, hopefully with you engaging this here spaza front man, singakhana...makwande*
